Maryann Mahaffey was born January 18, 1925 in Burlington, Iowa. She received a B.A. in social work from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa in 1946 and a Master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 1951. She became an Associate Professor at Wayne State University in the School of Social Work in 1965.
